Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my circuit breakers keep tripping, and can I just install a larger one?
A circuit breaker is a safety device designed to protect the wiring in your walls from overheating. If a 15-amp breaker trips, it is because the load connected to that circuit is exceeding the wire’s heat capacity. You should never replace a breaker with a larger one (e.g., swapping a 15-amp for a 20-amp) unless the wiring itself is upgraded. Doing so removes the “weak link” safety feature, allowing the wires to get hot enough to melt their insulation and start a fire inside the walls. Continuous tripping usually indicates an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, or a failing “arc-fault” (AFCI) breaker that is detecting dangerous sparking.
While both terms are often used interchangeably, they represent different electrical failures. A Short Circuit occurs when a “hot” wire touches a “neutral” wire, causing an immediate, massive surge of current that trips the breaker instantly. A Ground Fault occurs when the “hot” wire touches the “ground” wire or a grounded part of a junction box or appliance. This is particularly dangerous in “wet” areas like kitchens or bathrooms. This is why GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are required; they monitor the balance of current and can cut power in as little as 1/40th of a second if they detect current leaking to a ground path (like a person).
Flickering lights are often more than just an annoyance; they are a sign of high-resistance connections. If the flickering happens when a large appliance (like an AC or vacuum) kicks on, it usually means the start-up current is causing a temporary voltage drop. However, if lights flicker randomly or brighten and dim intermittently, it often points to a loose neutral connection at the main panel or the utility service entrance. A loose neutral is a serious fire hazard because it can cause voltage to “float,” potentially sending 240 volts into 120-volt circuits and destroying your electronics.
