UV-C Air Purification System
Frequently Asked Questions
How does UV light actually "kill" airborne pathogens?
UV air purification uses ultraviolet-C (UVC) light, which is a specific short-wave frequency that is germicidal. Rather than catching a virus or bacteria in a physical mesh, the UVC light penetrates the cellular walls of the microorganism and disrupts its DNA or RNA. This process, known as photodimerization, renders the pathogen sterile so it cannot reproduce or infect anyone. For this to work effectively in an HVAC system, the intensity of the light must be balanced with the “dwell time,” or the amount of time the air is exposed to the light as it moves through the ducts.
A coil-mount UV light is installed directly facing the indoor evaporator coil. Since this coil is often damp from condensation, it is a prime breeding ground for mold and biofilm. The UV light stays on constantly to keep the coil surfaces “scoured” clean, which also improves heat transfer efficiency. A return-duct UV system is designed to treat the air as it flows past. These units are typically much more powerful because they have to neutralize moving pathogens in a fraction of a second, whereas coil-mount lights have the luxury of shining on a stationary surface all day.
Standard UVC lamps designed for residential HVAC systems are “ozone-free.” However, some low-quality or specialized “vacuum UV” lamps can produce ozone as a byproduct of the light reacting with oxygen molecules. Ozone is a lung irritant and should generally be avoided in occupied spaces. When selecting a UV purification system, it is important to verify that it is UL-validated for zero ozone emissions. Additionally, because UVC light can degrade plastic and rubber, a professional installer will ensure the lamp is positioned away from sensitive components like plastic drain pans or wire insulation.
